Teachers struggle with helping newcomers to Alberta master reading

Educators in the province are having a tough time helping newcomers master English literacy.

Reports show they are being outperformed by English language learner students in British Columbia and Ontario.

A University of Calgary professor says it should be a wake up call that teachers need to be better trained to teach English.

Hetty Roessingh tells The Calgary Herald there has to be more emphasis on vocabulary and less reliance on immersion education.
