City officials say Stu Peppard Arena in SW Calgary will be closed for the entire ice season now, to repair a sagging roof.
The cycle of freeze and thaw has caused structural problems that are worse than first thought.
The closure means many Hockey Calgary teams are looking for somewhere else to practice and play games. It could also mean many hockey parents will have to travel a lot further to watch their kids.
Ice time will be tight. The city has already rescheduled games, but over 100 practices will not be happening while the doors of the arena remain closed.
Christina Rogers from Hockey Calgary tells 660News, the community is really stepping up to help the teams out. “It’s just great to see that when something like this does happen in this city, people are more than willing to step up and help out.” She says.
“We’ve had nothing but positive responses from not only the city but also with all our private ice rinks.”
Rogers says they can’t be picky about what ice time they do get, and team practices will likely be scattered across the city.
