Murder investigation in Hobbema

An early morning fire arms complaint has turned into a homicide investigation in Hobbema.

The RCMP responded to the Samson Townsite around 4:15 a.m. Saturday.

Mounties found a 16 year old man with fatal injuries.

Police are looking into whether or not the incident is gang related.

They have not named the young victim, but friends have identified him to the Edmonton Journal as Levonne Baptiste.

This is the aboriginal community’s first homicide in more than a year.

Prior to that, the community experienced a number of high-profile murders and gang activity including the 2011 shooting death of five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird as he slept in his bed.

Two months later, his aunt, Chelsea Yellowbird, was killed in a drive-by shooting.

The official cause of death of the latest death is to be determined pending an autopsy.

RCMP Constable Perry Cardinal tells 660News they’re rounding up witnesses.
