Psoriasis support

Valentine’s Day is coming up soon but for many who suffer from psoriasis, it’s a different story.  For those those living with the condition, the idea of romance and intimacy can be extremely daunting.

However, one expert on the condition says it’s very possible.

Psoriasis, believed to be genetic, is when the immune system mistakes a normal skin cell for a pathogen, which results in the overproduction of new skin cells, causing red, flakey patches.

There are treatments available including injections and creams.

The injectible medications can almost entirely remove the patches.

Calgary dermatologist Dr. Kirk Barber says the heartbreak of psoriasis is two-fold, affecting the emotional heart and the physical one.

“There is a significant, and I mean significant, number of young adults who have inflammatory disease that is literally physically affecting their heart.   What we’re learning is that if we can treat the psoriasis more aggressively, it is likely that we’ll be able to change that path that they were going down toward chronic heart disease,” says Dr. Barber.

He recommends sufferers be vigilant when it comes to their treatment and to seek a support group to help them to deal with the life long condition.
