Canadian crime stats disputed

A former Alberta crown prosecutor is disputing the way Stats Canada reports crime rates.

Scott Newark is the author of a new report by the MacDonald Laurier Institute showing StatsCan only uses date on crimes reported to police.

Newark tells The Calgary Sun, more than two thirds of crimes are not reported by the public and in the case of multiple offences, only the most serious is included in the stats.

His report comes out as the federal government is poised to use Stats Canada crime rates as evidence to show its tough of crime strategy is working.
