Provincial Tories commit $85-million to Alberta Metis

Over the next 10 years, the Alberta Government will be committing a total of $85-million dollars to the eight Metis settlements in the province.

Premier Alison Redford made the announcement Tuesday morning, noting, the goal of the agreement is to ensure the communities can be self-sufficient.

President of the Metis Settlements General Council, Randy Hardy, explains where the funding will go.

“We’re looking at capacity enhancement, better governance, greater accountability, greater transparency, policing and some will go toward education, ensuring that our people have the same opportunity that other Alberta children have, in terms of acquiring academic diplomas and getting the appropriate trades,” he said.

The announcement also involved a signing ceremony and an exchanging of gifts between the Premier, on behalf of the province, and Hardy.
