New website aims to educate about barley

Whole grains are a hot trend in food right now and Alberta barley producers are trying to capitalize on it.

They’ve launched a new website, GoBarley.com, to promote the crop and educate consumers.

Linda Whitworth, a food specialist at the Alberta Barley Commission says the website includes recipes, events and guest blogs.

“It’s a consumer website, because we want consumers to think about using barley in alternate ways than they might have in the past. It’s not just for beer, it’s not just for beef barley soup. There’s so many things you can do with barley.” She says.

Health Canada says eating barley can lead to reduced blood cholesterol and one serving provides 35 per cent of your daily recommended fibre intake.
