The first state-of-the-art trauma operating room in North America is open in Calgary at the Foothills Hospital.
The Interventional Trauma Operating Room (ITOR) cost $6 million and is designed to save time and lives.
In the ITOR patients suffering from severe traumatic injuries will be diagnosed faster and get more comprehensive treatment.
Dr. Andrew Kirkpatrick, Medical Director of Trauma Services says what makes this room special is an angiography suite in it, allowing for surgical and diagnostic imaging teams to work side by side.
In other hospitals, angiography suites and operating rooms are on opposite ends of the buildings.
This is the first of its kind in North America. The only other ITOR is in Sydney, Australia.
