Calgary Flames trade captain Jarome Iginla to Pittsburgh Penguins

CALGARY – The Calgary Flames have traded away the face of the franchise.

Calgary sent captain Jarome Iginla to the Pittsburgh Penguins ahead of the impending trade deadline.

In return, the Flames acquired forwards Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski, as well as the Penguins’ first-round pick in the 2013 draft.

The move signals the start of a rebuild for Calgary, which is on the verge of missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

Iginla has spent all 16 NHL seasons of his career with Calgary, scoring 525 goals and 570 assists in 1,219 games.

The 35-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has nine goals and 13 assists in 31 games this season.
