Fees waived at landfills for yard waste

Calgary is waiving fees at city landfills to get Calgarians to drop off their spring cleaning yard waste to be composted.

Starting now until June 2nd, all three local landfills will be accepting loads of leaves, branches, plants and yard material.

Spokesperson Corey Colbran tells The Calgary Herald yard waste makes up half of residential garbage this time of year, and can take decades to decompose if it gets trapped in a landfill.

Residents are asked to keep the material loose or put it in paper yard waste bags.
