Alberta to unveil renewable/alternative energy framework

According to an wind and solar energy expert, the industry has been waiting 20 years for a renewable and alternative energy framework to govern the business.

Now the Redford government has plans to craft such a policy, but it also plans to get input from Albertans before unveiling the policy.

The framework would govern wind, solar and geo-thermal electricity generation.

Lethbridge College professor Kris Hodgson, a member of the Alberta Clean Technology Industry Alliance, tells the Calgary Herald the policy could enhance Alberta’s international reputation, especially in light of the negative publicity the oilsands is receiving.

Currently coal and natural gas generate about 89 per cent of the province’s power. Wind generation is next at four per cent, followed by bio-fuels and hydro at three per cent each.
