Fire bans springing up around Alberta

Fire bans are popping up around the province thanks to dry conditions and summer-like temperatures.

It’s a perfect mix for wildfires to ignite, which they did over the weekend, with 25 reported Sunday alone.  That includes a grass fire near Airdrie that charred some 30 acres Sunday evening.

The largest fire in the province is in the southern region of the County of Grande Prairie.   It has burned through about one square kilometre of land.

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development’s Geoffrey Driscoll says the fire is not in a forest protection area but they’re helping out the Grande Prairie Department.

Driscoll cautions the conditions will likely continue to be very friendly to wildfires for the near future.

As a result, fire bans are in place in many areas of central and southern Alberta, including Red Deer County, Rocky View County, Cochrane and Airdrie.  However, as yet, there is not one in Calgary.
