Fire bans across Central and Southern Alberta

Hot, dry, and windy:  a perfect storm for fires in Central and Southern Alberta.

It’s resulted in fire warnings on two fronts, the Calgary Fire Department has called a fire ban and the province has issued a rare Fire Weather Advisory for Central and Southern Alberta.

Wildfire Information Officer Geoff Driscoll tells 660news this is very serious.

“These are extremely rare, in fact we’ve only had two of them in the last three years. Two years ago to the day we called a fire advisory. That was right before the wildfire in Slave Lake and surrounding areas,” Driscoll says.

Forty per cent of Slave Lake was destroyed by that blaze, including the town hall, the library, a radio station, and many homes.

As part of the advisory, Albertans are urged to use extreme caution. All burning permits within the forested protection area have been cancelled and no new permits will be issued.

Driscoll says 22 wildfires are currently burning in the province. All are under control except for the one that has hundreds of residents on alert, near Nordegg.
