Remembering Amber five years later

Looking at ways to remember their former friend and colleague, those who knew Amber Webb-Bowerman will soon be helping more budding young journalists.

It’s been five years since the Calgary-based writer and news woman was killed.  She was a victim of what police called a domestic homicide.

On Monday, her Memorial Foundation announced a second scholarship in her name, this time for Communications students at Mount Royal University.

The fundraising alone was a huge undertaking by the group who needed to raise $30,000 to reach endowment status.

The Foundation’s President Kathe Lemon tells 660News positivity has allowed them to keep the enthusiasm and Amber’s spirit alive.

“Remembering how she passed away would have quickly burned us out,” explains Lemon.

In conjunction with the scholarships, the foundation plans to financially sponsor two Calgary based groups (the Youthlink Publications Society and the WordsWorth Creative Writing Residency).

Amber’s mother Susan believes her daughter would be touched by the outpouring of love and support.

“She liked to be in the limelight, she would make an entrance and say ‘taa-daa’, I think she would be pleased,” says Webb. “I really do!”

Since the memorial foundation was established in 2008, $66,000 has been raised and distributed.
