Probe into fatal helicopter crash underway

Two people were killed another injured when a helicopter crashed 130 kilometres north of Fort McMurray on Wednesday.

The name of the pilot who was killed has not been released.

As for the two passengers on-board, both were biologists working for Environment and Sustainable Resource Development.

The Edmonton Journal reports the pair was working to help track Alberta’s caribou population.

The paper has identified the woman who died as Kristina Norstrom, and say Simon Slater is the sole survivor.

He’s listed in stable condition in hospital.

Premier Alison Redford and Environment Minister Diana McQueen have issued a joint statement offering their condolences to the families of the victims, asking all Albertans to extend their thoughts and prayers to those affected by the sad events.

The downed aircraft was operated by Aurora Helicopters, which has been flying in that part of the province for 25 years.

Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board are expected to be on the scene Thursday, trying to figure out exactly what happened.
