Feds talking to municipalities about infrastructure funding

The Federation of Canadian Municipalities annual conference is in Vancouver this year.

The Federal Transport minister discussed the $53 Billion in funding from the federal government towards infrastructure over the next 10 years.

Denis Lebel has announced the funding should be in place by the end of the fiscal year.

The deal is split into three main components…

– The Community Improvement Fund will see $32.2 Billion, it will cover an indexed Gas Tax Fund and options such as roads, public transit and recreational facilities.

– The New Building Canada Fund- which covers projects of national, regional and local significance will receive $14 Billion.

– Lastly a renewed P3 Canada fund for public-private-partnerships will receive $1.25 Billion.

At the same time, NDP leader Tom Mulcair told local leaders Canada is one of the only countries in the G8 that has never had a national vision for transit issues.

“The irony is we were born of that vision of transit with the railroad that was going to tie us together” Mulcair told the conference “Unfortunately we are still using the same railroad.”

Mulcair is looking to Europe as an example for transit, where some countries have been working on their transit system for 40 years.
