Clean-up complete one year after Gleniffer Lake spill

One year after an oil spill in Gleniffer Lake, the resort town says there’s no sign of the environmental mess that was made.

In 2012, up to 475,000 litres of crude oil burst from a Plains Midstream Canada pipeline in the Red Deer River system, flowing into the lake.

Real estate agent Gary Mortier tells 660News, the clean-up took about three weeks, and the impact was very short-lived.

“As far as real estate goes, we’ve sold more up to this point this year, than we have since 2007,” he says.  “There were a few cancellations for some of these rentals but they ended up getting rebooked or booked by someone else anyways, so actually rental revenue increased last year.”

Mortier says the company’s clean-up actually made for a better boating season last year, as they collected all the debris coming down the river.

Plains Midstream has also put up a billboard on the QEII, to help attract tourism to the area.
