If your dog is sneezing alot and you don’t know why, it’s best to get him checked out.
Many of us sneeze up a storm during allergy season and pets can have allergies too.
Sometimes though, if your dog is sneezing a great deal, C.A.R.E. Centre Medical Director Dr. Danny Joffe says, it may be something more serious.
“If it’s a bacterial infection then there can be discharge from the nose that they need an antibiotic to help with. There are some more sinister causes… fungal infections and even tumours in the nasal cavity can occur,” says Dr. Joffe.
Joffe says the sneezing can also be caused by nasal mites, which can be tough to diagnose.
“So often if your dog is sneezing, your veterinarian will recommend doing a trial therapy with anti-parasitic medication and if that stops the sneezing, we sort of back our way into a diagnosis of nasal mites.”
Otherwise, the only way mites can be confirmed is to put the dog under anaesthetic and do a nasal probe. The mites don’t like the anaesthetic and will leave the nose of their own accord.
Mites can be picked up as your dog sniffs around park areas.
Luckily, they’re not something that can be transferred to humans.
