Ontario elementary schools to lock front doors this fall: report

TORONTO – Most Ontario elementary schools will usher in a new era of security when classes start in September.
According to a report in the Toronto Star, around 80 per cent — or 3,200 — of the province’s 4,000 elementary schools will have its doors locked and be equipped with front-door buzzers and security cameras.
The Star reported the schools asked for and received the funding to implement the security measures.
This means that anyone, even a parent, who needs to enter an elementary school after the bell rings will have to be buzzed in.
The security changes were put in place after the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Twenty children and six staff members died in the shooting.
