City working hard to restore power to downtown

Lots of flood clean-up work has been done in Calgary but a lot remains.

Volunteers often outnumber flood victims in many communities.

However getting power restored remains a high priority.  Enmax is hoping to have electricity restored to the remaining beltline areas by midnight.

Meanwhile the mayor is still urging people to stay away from the downtown core if at all possible.

Naheed Nenshi says extra cars downtown hinder crews getting from one building to the next.

“Let’s make Canada Day the first day that Calgary comes back downtown. We are in no means back to normal, if you don’t need to be downtown stay away. Let the building owners and the building operators and the emergency crews have a chance to do their assessment and remediation,” says Nenshi

Starting Thursday you will have to start paying for parking but parking might be tough to find as there are only 55 percent of stalls available.

Property taxes are still due this Friday, June 28th but Nenshi is going to ask council for a two week grace period for those who can’t get to a city centre on time.

Landfills will be open to the public from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily until further notice and garbage pick-up will continue on your usual collection day in communities not impacted by flooding.

Starting Thursday, support centres will be open in a number of areas in Calgary. For details click HERE.
