Exclusive cycling pathway now open downtown

Downtown cyclists are now pedaling their way on an exclusive pathway.
The 7th Street Cycle Track opened Tuesday morning, which runs from the Bow River Pathway to 8th Avenue S.W. and is separate from both parked and moving cars as well as walkers.
Director of Transportation-Planning with the City of Calgary, Don Mulligan said with the path on a priority-one list, there will be maintenance during the winter.
“There are cyclists, there’s not as many obviously in the winter, but our statistics show that about 30 per cent cycle year-round so we expect there will be cycling in the winter,” he said.
Mulligan said there has been a 35 per cent increase in downtown bike use since 2006 and the $1-million cost is relatively inexpensive.
“To put that in perspective, an interchange that we build comes in at $50-$60-million so you could build 50 to 60 of these cycle tracks of that length across the one interchange,” he said.
