Officer shoots dog during NE traffic stop

A police officer has been forced to shoot a dog during a routine traffic stop.

Around 8 pm Wednesday, police pulled over an SUV for speeding on 52nd Street northeast near 16th Avenue.

Police say a female officer that had pulled the vehicle over became suspicious of the occupants and called for backup.

One of three dogs in the vehicle then jumped through an open window and lunged at the second officer, biting him in the abdomen.

He then pulled his gun and shot the dog in the face.

Duty Inspector Patty McCallum tells 660News, the officer who was bitten was not injured while the dog that was shot survived and taken for medical treatment.

The man and woman in the vehicle were taken into custody but no charges have been laid.

The other two dogs were handed over to animal services.

As is standard procedure when a police member fires their weapon, the CPS Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
