Calgary Folk Fest goes on as planned

A 34 year summer time tradition that was very much threatened by last month’s flooding is set to open its gates on Prince’s Island as the Calgary Folk Music Festival welcomes thousands for four days starting Thursday night.
Much like the Stampede, the Folk Music Festival show is a “go” thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and city parks crews who pulled off the amazing feet of remediating the island so a Calgary tradition can continue.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi is thankful he will be parked on a tarp with 25,000 other music fans for this World class event.
“It’s one of my favourite things of the year; sitting on that island listening to music, it’s an amazing experience,” he says.
There are some roped off areas on the island, the art market and one of the stages have been moved to Eau Claire plaza for the weekend.
The north side river bank is a “no go” zone still, but festival organizers say the venue is in great shape to welcome all of the artists and the 25,000 fans who will stroll through Thursday – Sunday.
