Humane society applauds cat abuser’s sentence

The Calgary Humane Society is claiming victory after a 90-day jail sentence for causing grave injuries to a cat.

Robert Habermehl was handed the sentence last week, after a lengthy trial in which the accused attempted to delay proceedings and claimed he was deprived of due process.

He was found guilty of wilfully causing pain and suffering to his then girlfriend’s cat ‘Minnie’ in September of 2009.

The Humane Society’s Brad Nichols said it’s not often we see people go to jail for abusing animals.

“It’s fairly rare,” he said. “I can only think of a handful of times in my time here and it’s usually only in the violent cases where you see incarceration added to the sentencing.”

Nichols credited the entire team on the case for their work.
