Local animal trainer calls python attack rare, permits tough to get in AB

After a deadly snake attack in New Brunswick killed two young boys, questions swirl about the care of similar large pythons in Alberta.
Provincial laws say keeping an African Rock Python as a pet is illegal.
It’s a controlled animal; only allowed for the purposes of education and conservation.
In order to get a permit, strict criteria must be met.
Reptile World in Drumheller is home to similar large snakes, like Anacondas.
Animal Trainer James Turner tells 660News, while this incident is definitely rare; the proper safety measures must always be taken.
“We make sure the enclosures are extremely secure, we always have more than one keeper present, just because of the size and strength of the animal,” he explains.
Turner stresses these snakes are driven by instinct.
