AB Wildlife Association approves northwest logging stoppage

The Alberta Wilderness Association is happy with the Redford government’s decision to halt logging for a year in a part of the Little Smoky caribou range.
Alberta’s new forest management plan includes a year deferral in the the herd range, northeast of Jasper National Park.
But conservation specialist Carolyn Campbell said there is a shadow over the decision, which includes a 10-year logging plan in the adjacent A La Peche area.
“What we’re hoping in the near term, that logging will be deferred also in the A La Peche, because that’s very important that those caribou have a chance to survive as well,” she said.
Campbell added the year-long deferral is a welcome step to conserve the 15 caribou herd on provincial land.
