Calgary police investigating possible hate crime downtown

Calgary police could be dealing with a hate crime, after a man was assaulted on the weekend downtown.
Acting Insp. Ralph Veckenstedt said around 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1400 block of 11th Ave. S.W., the victim was trying to help hail a cab for a lone suspect.
“He was asked about his sexual orientation and when he answered, he was attacked from behind,” Veckenstedt said. “He received serious injuries that sent him to hospital that were non-life threatening, but consisted of a black eye and heavy bruising to his face.”
After speaking with the cab company and reviewing CCTV, investigators say this could be a potential hate crime, but they are still looking for more information.
Veckenstedt said these types of potential crimes are quite uncommon.
The Diversity Resource Team and Hate Crime Investigators are also involved.
