Sundance Canyon reopen after bear carcass found

A popular trail in Banff National Park is open, again.
The Sundance Canyon area was closed after a grizzly bear consumed a black bear last week.
Officials re-opened the trail Tuesday.
Human Wildlife Conflict Specialist, Steve Michel, says there is no reason to panic.
“This grizzly bear is just out using the landscape throughout Banff National Park as it usually does and we are not anticipating any additional concerns with people,” says Michel.
Michel adds the only risk to the public was when the carcass was found, which is what prompted the trail closure, in the first place.
Michel notes officials believe it was a predatory attack on the black bear.
“They’re primarily vegetarian, for the most part, and eat berries and variety of different plants. But, they will take advantage of any animal food source for that significant amount of protein that’s available. So, whether it’s an elk, a moose, or a sheep, or, in this case a black bear, that’s something that is all part of their diet on a regular basis,” says Michel.
The trail in Banff National Park was shut for 10 days the discovery of the carcass.
