The mayor has declared September 8, 2013 the first ever Recovery Day.
Naheed Nenshi, along with several other speakers took to the stage at Olympic Plaza to talk about the road to sobriety.
Former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy’s story of abuse and addiction is well known throughout Canada.
He says his struggle was hard and he could not have done it alone.
“It takes all of us to show up, to pull on the rope. It takes all of us to give back,” says Kennedy. “And the time you get the phone call that you don’t want to go for coffee when a guy needs help, maybe think again,”
Kennedy says he’s grateful to be an addict as it helped him became a better father and a better friend.
Twelve other cities are joining Calgary in celebrating Recovery Day.
However, even with ceremonies and celebrations every September 8th, people like Kennedy know recovery takes one day at a time.
