First-degree murder charge laid in 2012 St. Patrick’s Day murder

Charges have been laid in the case of a stabbing death on St. Patrick’s Day 2012, inside a northeast Calgary pub.

It was just after 1:45a.m. on March 17th of last year when 23-year-old Mario Gomez got into a fight with a 24-year-old man at the Sunset and Vine Pub on 68th Street northeast.

Gomez was stabbed a few times and died inside the establishment. The suspect quickly left with a group of friends.

Friday, the Calgary Police Homicide Unit charged Michael George Delday with first degree murder, and he’s already in police custody.

Delday has been the primary suspect in this case since shortly after Gomez was killed, but he was arrested earlier this year on unrelated charges and taken into custody by police, according to Staff Sergeant Grant Miller.

“A search warrant was executed at the residence that he was at, where fire arms and drugs were seized, and those are the related charges. That’s why he’s in custody now,” says Miller.

Police say, Delday and Gomez knew one another in the distant past, and they may have gone to school at some point, but at the time of Gomez’s death, they were not friends or in contact.
