Rogers makes major financial commitment in Alberta

A communications giant is buying into Alberta to the tune of $700-million.

Rogers announced Tuesday aggressive plans to expand its retail and cellular network operations.

It’s also entering into a 13-year sponsorship deal with the Edmonton Oilers.

The company is rolling out its LTE network to several more parts of the province, boosting their coverage by 40 per cent.

Rogers Executive Vice President and CEO John Boynton says they’re making a concerted effort to grow in Alberta, saying it won’t be same network Albertans are used to.

As part of the agreement with the Oilers, Rogers will now be the official telecommunications sponsor.

“We have been speaking to the Oilers for a very long time,” says Boynton, “and interested in the Edmonton market for some time because of the growth.”

The company will get their logo in Rexall Place, home of the Oilers, and will power the team’s website.

Rogers is the parent company of 660News.
