Saturday was the kickoff of Fire Prevention Week Kickoff at several open houses in Calgary and this year’s theme is one many can relate to.
It’s the message of ‘Preventing Kitchen Fires’ and the Calgary Fire Dept.’s Carol Henke said it’s a much too frequent problem.
“Very important topic because in 2012, the Calgary Fire Dept. attended 449 kitchen fires, over one a day, it’s the most common reason we attend residential fires,” she said, explaining what to do in case one breaks out. “Put on an oven mit, slide the lid over the pot carefully and turn the element off and leave it, leave it until it cools down.”
Along with awareness, the day was about family fun, with demonstrations, snacks and information booklets, with resident Keith Dewing taking a look at the one-year-old South Calgary Station.
“We checked out the trucks, so we got to see how the ladders come down, all the bits of equipment, the GPS and how the dispatch works, pretty high-tech, very interesting,” he said.
It’s not surprising what his nine-year-old Eve found the most enjoyable.
“I like the fire truck, I don’t know, it’s just cool,” she said.
Along with the South Calgary Station, open houses were held at the Huntington Hills, Silversprings and McKenzie Towne stations.
