School has been cancelled Wednesday at Willow Park Elementary, after fire crews put out an early morning blaze.
The school’s alarm system alerted police of the fire around 4:00a.m.
Once crews were on scene and realized the severity of the blaze, a second alarm was called.
Along with the fire in a northeast classroom, adjacent windows are broken, and firefighters found large rocks inside; likely what was thrown to smash in the windows.
Battalion Chief John Cherweniuk says eight fire trucks were called to help put out the blaze.
“Of course with a two alarm fire, we like to have additional resources on scene. Now that the fire is actually knocked down and contained, our biggest challenge right now is to remove smoke from the structure,” he says. “The whole main floor was fully charged with smoke, and there was light smoke on the second floor.”
Firefighters continue to conduct searches of the building’s perimeter for hot spots, as well as the inside.
The Arson Unit is taking over the investigation.
The Calgary Board of Education and Willowpark Elementary will have more information as to when classes will resume, when information allows.
