The airport is showing off a new multi-million dollar overpass on McCall way, that’s giving cars and trucks access to McCall north business park and it will eventually be a key link to YYC’s new runway on the airport’s eastside.
It will eventually carry 200 aircrafts per day as heavy as a million pounds each over top of McCall Way, but for now Taxiway Romeo serves motor vehicles as the McCall Way underpass.
VP of planning and engineering at the airport Bob Schmitt says, “what we have constructed is this road which that allows access into our McCall north subdivision for the public and businesses and in the future, Taxiway Romeo will allow the new runway to connect to our existing air field, so there will be about 200 air craft movements across this overpass.”
The bridge will link the YYC airfield to the new runway set to open in the spring. This means cars and trucks accessing businesses will drive under taxing airplanes when the runway is done, a common practice in Toronto, Vancouver and dozens of airports across the US.
