Avalanche deaths down

The number of people dying from avalanches in Canada is the lowest it’s been in three decades.

The Calgary Sun reports, five people died in the 2013 season, from October 2012 to September 30; the lowest number since 1984.

Most avalanche related fatalities occur in Western Canada.

Mary Clayton from The Canadian Avalanche Centre tells the paper, the falling numbers can be attributed to increased safety education.

There have been big changes in the snowmobiling community, which once accounted for a large portion of the tragedies.
