Warning about more wildlife on roads

A shocking 14,036 animals were killed on Alberta roads last year.

The biggest chunk of the crashes, 18 per cent, happened during the month of November.

Donna Schuhltz with Alberta Transportation tells 660News most crashes happen at dawn and dusk and between the hours of 7 and 11 at night.

Reduced daylight hours, mating and migration and the salt and vegetation along the roads all draw animals to the highways this time of year.

Last year, more than half the collisions on Alberta roads involved animals.

Officials remind us, crashes involving wildlife often take people’s lives as well.
