Scandals zap confidence in elected officials

A new poll from Leger has found more than 25 per cent of people have absolutely no confidence in their provincial and federal leaders.

The National Affairs writer with Yahoo Canada, who commissioned the poll, calls the survey a wake up call for those in public office.

Recent spending scandal in the senate and the ongoing controversy with Toronto Mayor Rob Ford are taking their toll on Canadians, Matt Coutts said.

Coutts says it’s no surprise that we are losing faith in those in public office.

According to the study, 51 per cent of Canadians are not satisfied with the work of their provincial and federal governments.

At the same time, 42 per cent are not happy with the work being done by mayors and councillors.

Coutts says the one thing most Canadians want from their politicians is honesty.

The survey also reveals younger voters are the most displeased with what’s going on with 18 percent of 18 to 34 year olds stating they will not vote the next time the writ is dropped.
