Some two thousand backpacks full of Christmas toys, clothing and daily living necessities are being picked up at a TransCanada Storage Facility in Airdrie Monday.
They’ll be handed out to children across the province who need them, thanks to donations to “Stephen’s Backpacks Society.”
The organization was founded in 2006 when 5 year-old Stephen McPhee was concerned about children who had nothing for Christmas.
His mother, Nancy, says the generosity since then has been overwhelming.
“A woman came in, a very low income family; they had been saving all year for Christmas, they had saved up $600 and then they sat as a family and heard about what Stephen was doing, they gave up everything and made 22 backpacks, filled them to overflowing and brought them into the warehouse.”
The society has helped over 28,000 children since its inception.
