Several Calgary flights affected by Toronto and Eastern Canada ice storm

Freezing rain warnings from a serious ice storm hitting Toronto, eastern Canada and the U.S. is creating some havoc for airports and holiday travelers on what is usually a very busy weekend.

The weather conditions have also resulted in scores of flight cancellations and delays at airports in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Fredericton, Saint John, Halifax and St. John’s and into the U.S. as far as Chicago.

As of 3:30 p.m. Sunday, at least 10 flights into Toronto from around Canada were listed as cancelled as well as seven outbound flights.

Two morning flights from Calgary to Canada’s biggest city were cancelled as well as one to Montreal with passengers being rebooked to other connecting flights.

A Calgary arrival from Montreal, Edmonton and Chicago were also listed as cancelled.

Danielle Sikorski was on her way home to Montreal from Calgary with her boyfriend when her trip hit a snag.

“We got here and we found out that our flight was cancelled because of the storm in Montreal, then later we actually got hooked up with a flight that has to take us on a huge detour across Canada,” she said. “But it’s going to be worth it because we get to see our family early instead of on Christmas day.”

Another traveler shared a similar story where in place of his original flight connecting from Chicago O’Hare International Airport overnight, he was forced to wait for several hours until the morning.

Chris Boechler said switching his flight was hardly a problem at all.

“I missed my flight to Hamilton, and a nice gentleman at the kiosk at West Jet, he was very helpful and found me another flight to fly into Toronto, no extra charge,” said Boechler.

When it comes to delays, flights into Calgary from the east are seeing extra waits of around one to two-and-a-half hours with outbound flights seeing shorter or no delays.
