Rapid Transit projects approved

It’s being called a major development for Calgary Transit and the entire city.

City council has approved a motion to move forward with its massive Transit Prioritization Plan, which would include seven new bus rapid transit and transitway routes across the city by the year 2021.

Councillor Shane Keating tells 660News, he wasn’t expecting his colleagues to reach a decision so soon. “The stars did align, because we have now technically three levels of funding to put in place so that all seven of the priority transitways can move forward.”

The projects will cost a whopping $889-million.

Much of the funds will come from the ten year transit plan council approved last fall, through the $52 million property tax rebate.

The rest of the money will come from funds promised by the federal and provincial governments.
