Family mourns son killed in fatal hit-and-run

Family Day is supposed to be about joy and fun, but for one Calgary family, it has turned into a day of despair.

Moises Morles, a 26-year-old Calgarian, was struck and killed in a fatal hit-and-run Monday morning around 4:00 a.m. at the intersection of 30A Avenue and Centre St. North.

Four and a half hours later, the suspected driver turned himself into police, and charges are being considered, although it’s not clear what factors led to the collision.

His father, Harold Chavarria, and mother, Reyma Morles, went to the site where he was killed, because they couldn’t believe their son was gone.

“He was an excellent kid. He was a hard worker,” Chavarria said while fighting tears in his eyes. “It’s hard when someone takes your very dear family away from this life.”

With six other children, his parents said they always focused on spending quality time together and they were hoping to do the same on Family Day.

“We were planning to see him today. We were looking forward to seeing him today,” Chavarria said.

Sgt. Colin Foster said police are trying to figure out what led to the collision, the third hit-and-run in 2014 which has been a serious collision or fatality.

“In a majority of these cases, if people remained at the scene, they wouldn’t be looking at charges,” Foster said. “If you flee the scene of a collision, we can only assume the worst and we will charge accordingly.”

Charges have not yet been laid and when asked how he felt about the suspected driver turning himself in, Chavarria said this.

“We are glad that he turned in himself, maybe he had a chance if he would’ve stopped and do something faster, quickly,” he said.
