City asks children for art commemorating 2013 flood

As we near the one-year anniversary of the 2013 flood, there’s a chance for children to help honour it.
Kids 12 and under are invited to submit their art and photos from the devastation by April 4th, so they can be displayed in June as part of a flood commemoration piece.
“The flood of 2013 hit Calgary hard and we recognize some Calgarians have faced extremely difficult times this past year,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said in a release. “One of the ways we want to remember June 20, 2013 and recognize that community spirit is by calling on the children of Calgary to show us their experience of the flood through art and photography.”
“These young Calgarians are the future of our city and the next generation of our city’s pioneer spirit.”
Children are given a list of questions used to inspire them when creating their art such as:
-What do you remember from the flood?
-What happened to you and your family during the flood?
-How did you or your family help during the flood?
The Children’s Art Show will be one of several activities planned for the one-year commemoration of the June flood.
Chris Arthurs, incoming Director of Recovery Operations, said it’s important to involve children in such events.
“Kids want to be part of this and rightly so, it was an event that touched every Calgarian regardless of age ” said Arthurs.
Calgary’s youth is invited to send in a 8.5″ x 11″ piece via Canada Post, email, in person at City Hall or to Calgary Public Library locations.
The finished piece will be unveiled on June 20th.
