A new study warns a new generation of super lice accounts for 97 per cent of Canadian cases.
The bugs have a genetic mutation which makes them resistant to the traditional cheap and safe insecticides in anti-lice shampoos, creams and sprays.
The National Post reports, these chemicals can now only kill 3 per cent of head lice cases, and in some instances make the problems worse, leaving the critters even more resistant to treatment.
The study is in the Journal of Medical Entomology.
