Wet roads, snow and cooler temperatures made for a messy commute Tuesday morning.
Calgary police say 112 collisions were reported between 5 and 10 AM, with two of them involving injuries.
One of the worst crashes was just before 8 o’clock with a multi-vehicle collision at Panamount Gate and Harvest Hills Boulevard.
“Due to the icy conditions, the intersection was blocked with a transit bus, three school buses, and several cars,” said Carol Henke, spokesperson for the Calgary Fire Department.
The weather also wreaked havoc on those who rely on Calgary Transit.
There were reports that some waited as more than 45 minutes outside after a few city buses were involved in crashes.
“They’re non-injury accidents,” said spokesman Ron Collins. “Certainly, it’s just a situation of, in some areas, buses could not get up the hill, and make it to all of the stops.”
Don Szarko, with the Alberta Motor Association says it’s just another reminder, winter is not over just yet.
“In fact, you can probably count on three or four major spring storms,” said Szarko. “Now, I don’t want to predict, but we’ve had them right into the middle of May, sometimes.”
Szarko admits it’s subjective and depends on the driver but he recommends people keep their snow tires on at least until the end of April.
