Alberta schools to stick to math basics

Kids in Alberta schools will have to memorize their multiplication tables next year after all.
Parent criticism of a new curriculum has led Education Minister Jeff Johnson to make sure basic math facts will be focused on in the classroom.
The Globe and Mail reports, current guidelines say pupils must know the multiplication tables but do not require memorization.
It’s a win for some parents and educators who were pushing for the education ministry to retreat from more creative or discovery-based learning techniques.
Johnson tells the paper, it was part of the plan all along; to ground students in the basics but also encourage open-ended exploration.
