City Hall presents flood project wish list to province

The city has submitted a $900-million wish list to the province to help protect Calgary against future flooding.

City Hall is still waiting to hear back on the 59 different projects preparing for the next big 1 in 100 year event.

However, officials are narrowing down a priority list, which includes a $300-million tunnel under the Glenmore Reservoir, connecting the Bow and Elbow rivers.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi tells City News, they have to talk about how to manage projects that don’t get funded by the province.

“We knew that there would be at least half a billion dollars, five hundred million dollars in recovery expenses: fixing stuff that was broken,” he said. “In addition to that, we need to do a lot of resilience work, preventing future floods, and so it’s not surprising to me that we’re up to about $1-billion.”

The city is already moving ahead with shoring up riverbanks, and other mitigation that just can’t wait.
