Fire department cautions against running dryers while sleeping

Three members of a Northeast Calgary family suffered minor smoke inhalation Tuesday morning after their dryer caught fire.

It happened around 8 a.m. when the family was home and awake.

Dryer fires are something the fire department is called out to quite frequently.

Carol Henke, spokesperson with Calgary Fire, said many can be prevented very easily.

“Typically, the most common reason we attend dryer fires is that the lint trap has not been cleaned out or the lint has built up in the hose that leads to the outside of the home,” said Henke.

She also said people should make sure the hoses are made of metal and any new dryers are installed and serviced by a professional.

The fire department recommends dryers shouldn’t be running while a person is sleeping or not at home.
