A new player emerges in City Hall

City Hall has a new man to watch for, as the city works on their four year budget.

Jeff Fielding has been hired as the new city manager.

The mayor says there was an international search to find a new manager before finding fielding in Ontario.

Fielding described himself as a fiscal conservative, and says his work in Ontario was similar to the situation he will face in Calgary in terms of the size of budget.

He said his job is about planning for now and the future.

“I think in the short run suburbs are part what we have to do and do them well, but in the longer run I think we are looking at the ways to accommodate the population that is different,” he said.

He lived in Calgary from 1998-2001 working as a city planner.

His new contract will last four years and will earn $315,000 annually.

Fielding will replace Owen Tobert, who retired after more than 30 years of public service.
