One third of Canadians have experienced child abuse in one form or another, according to a new study.
The report, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, looked at the relationship between abuse and mental disorders.
The study found 32 per cent of people had experienced physical or sexual abuse, or exposure to other domestic violence while they were young.
The highest rates of abuse were in Western Canada, with Alberta sitting closer to 36 per cent.
The study concluded preventing child abuse could reduce the likelihood of mental illness or suicidal thoughts.
