Dry conditions sparking grass fires

The dry conditions around Calgary are keeping crews busy as they contend with grass fires.

On Wednesday, they had to use a handful of apparatuses to put out a blaze at Ogden Road and Glenmore Trail in the southeast.

Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department tells 660News, it is important people dispose of their litter and cigarette butts properly because it’s very easy to inadvertently spark a fire.

“If there are shards of glasses or pieces of broke bottles, those can, in direct sunlight, cause magnification of the rays and may start a fire,” she said.

Henke said, if you smoke outside, use an ash tray with a solid and narrow opening so a gust of wind can’t pick the butt up.

If you are have a backyard fire pit, never leave it unattended.
